There are also fewer of the problems present in the more urban schools from the area - it's quiet enough there that they don't require a security presence, like some schools. In my ten years there, the police were at the school no more than six times, and all but two of those times were false alarms. Bullying can be a problem, but no more so than with any other school, and it can be very nicely mitigated by active parental involvement, which is something the district needs more of, anyway.

All in all, it's a safe, stable, very average school. If I had children of my own, I would not hesitate to send them there, myself. It would be worth the little work I would have to put in to make up for its shortcomings.
Spoon River Valley is a good school. It's not a great school, but it's not bad, either. The administration puts too much focus on sports and standardized testing, in my opinion, and not enough to a well-rounded education for all of the students. But the teachers themselves are very good (well, I can't vouch for the Chorus teacher, since they seem to go through those at a rate of about one every other year... but still,) and Mrs. Wasson is quite possibly the finest art teacher in the tri-county area.
Theres a kid there that uses bags and smashes chicken nuggets and pores milk on them they also have (get this) A 17 YEAR OLD 8TH GRADER. Are you kidding me? But it is what it is. This school has a serious race problem (and its not the teachers) its the kids. They mock and ridicule a African- American student because of the color of his skin. I find this hard to believe, but let me remind you this is also the school that has a 17 year old kid in 8th grade so I guess anything can happen in this stereotypic country school. Its sad man, really sad
